Isar Aerospace’s Spectrum rocket achieved a historic milestone yesterday, completing its first fully successful orbital launch and marking a turning point for Europe’s commercial space sector. The mission, named “Onward and Upward”, lifted off from Andøya Spaceport in Norway and successfully deployed its payload of CubeSats into low Earth orbit, establishing Isar Aerospace as the first privately funded European company to reach orbit.

Mission Overview

The Spectrum launch vehicle, standing 28 meters tall and powered by ten Aquila engines, lifted off at 22:12 CEST and completed all major flight milestones: MaxQ, MECO, stage separation, fairing deployment, upper‑stage ignition, and final circularization. The rocket crossed the Kármán line at 100 km before accelerating to orbital velocity.

The mission carried five CubeSats and one ESA‑linked experiment, selected through the German Space Agency’s Microlauncher Competition, providing low‑cost access to space for European universities and startups.

ESA’s Director General hailed the achievement as “yet another step towards a more diverse, autonomous European launch service sector.”

Technical Progress & Background

Spectrum’s success comes after years of rapid development and one failed test flight in 2025, which ended 30 seconds after liftoff. Engineers strengthened flight‑control software and added environmental margins, following a “launch, learn, repeat” philosophy. Yesterday’s flight validated these improvements with flawless performance.

Isar Aerospace is now scaling production, with plans to manufacture up to 40 rockets per year and meet growing commercial demand across Europe.

Payload Deployment

After completing its circularization burn, Isar Aerospace confirmed successful deployment of all CubeSats. These satellites will support scientific research, technology demonstrations, and educational programs across Europe.

A New Chapter for European Spaceflight

With this launch, Isar Aerospace has proven its orbital capability, become the first company to meet the European Launcher Challenge orbital milestone, and opened the door for a competitive European small-lift launch market.

CEO Daniel Metzler emphasized: “Europe now has sovereign access to space… We achieved within a few years what had taken the European space industry decades before.”

Isar Aerospace is preparing additional launch sites, including a new complex in Nova Scotia, Canada, and expanding production capacity to meet surging global demand. Europe’s small-lift launch sector is entering a new era, one defined by autonomy, competition, and rapid innovation.
